Creating a New Task
Tasks are the building blocks of TaskManager. Follow these steps to create a task with all the right settings.
-
Open the Task Creator
Click the "Create Task" button from the Tasks page, or use the quick-create option from The Helm dashboard.
-
Enter Basic Information
Add a clear, descriptive title and detailed instructions in the description field.
-
Configure Task Settings
Set the assignee, due date, priority, and other optional settings as needed.
-
Add Rewards & Consequences (Optional)
Attach point rewards for completion and/or consequences for incompletion.
-
Create the Task
Click "Create Task" to save. The assignee will be notified (if notifications are enabled).
Task Fields Explained
Title (Required)
A short, descriptive name for the task. Good titles are:
- Specific: "Clean the kitchen" instead of "Clean"
- Action-oriented: Start with a verb when possible
- Concise: Keep it under 100 characters
Description (Required)
Detailed instructions for completing the task. Include:
- Step-by-step instructions if complex
- Expected outcome or completion criteria
- Any resources or materials needed
- Special requirements or preferences
✓ Description Tips
Be specific about what "done" looks like. Instead of "Clean the kitchen," try "Clean the kitchen: wipe counters, wash dishes, sweep floor, take out trash."
Assignee
Choose who is responsible for completing the task:
- Specific member: Assign to one person
- Unassigned: Leave open for anyone to claim
- Self-assigned: Assign to yourself
Only dominants can create and assign tasks. Submissives receive tasks but can suggest tasks via comments.
Due Date
When the task should be completed. Options include:
- Specific date/time: Choose exact deadline
- Quick options: Today, Tomorrow, This Week, This Month
- No due date: Leave blank for open-ended tasks
⚠ Due Date Behavior
Tasks without due dates won't appear in calendar views and won't trigger overdue notifications. Set a due date if accountability matters.
Priority
Indicate how important or urgent the task is:
| Priority |
When to Use |
| Low |
Nice-to-have tasks, no urgency |
| Medium (Default) |
Standard tasks with normal importance |
| High |
Important tasks that should be prioritized |
| Critical |
Urgent tasks requiring immediate attention |
Reward Points
Points earned upon successful completion:
- Enter any positive number (0 for no points)
- Points are added to the assignee's balance when approved
- Points can be redeemed in the Points Store
- Consider task difficulty when setting point values
Consequence
What happens if the task is incomplete or overdue:
- Select from predefined consequences in your hierarchy
- Or leave blank for no consequence
- Consequences trigger automatically based on settings
See Consequences Guide for details.
Advanced Options
Require Photo/Video Proof
Require the assignee to attach media when marking complete:
- Photo only
- Video only
- Photo or video
- Multiple items required
Require Approval
When enabled, the task goes to "Pending Review" status when the assignee marks it complete. A dominant must then approve or reject:
- Approve: Task completes, rewards granted
- Reject: Task returns to In Progress with feedback
Make Recurring
Set the task to repeat automatically. See Recurring Tasks for details.
Mark as Ritual
Enable ritual mode for streak tracking and special visualization. See Rituals Guide for details.
Tags/Categories
Add tags to organize and filter tasks:
- Use existing tags or create new ones
- Multiple tags per task allowed
- Filter task lists by tag
- Examples: "chores", "training", "daily", "weekend"
Creating from Templates
Save time by creating tasks from templates:
- Click "Create from Template" instead of "Create Task"
- Select a template from the list
- Adjust any fields as needed
- Create the task
See Task Templates for creating and managing templates.
Quick Create
For simple tasks, use Quick Create from The Helm:
- Click the "+" button on the submissive card
- Enter a title
- Optionally set due date and points
- Click Create
The task is assigned to that submissive with default settings. Edit later to add more details.
Best Practices
Clear Instructions
The more detailed your description, the fewer questions and misunderstandings. Include what "done" looks like.
Realistic Deadlines
Set achievable due dates. Consider the assignee's schedule, task complexity, and other commitments.
Appropriate Rewards
Match point values to effort required. Consistency helps assignees understand expectations.
Use Templates
For tasks you create frequently, save a template to maintain consistency and save time.
